Ungrounding proves fatal

OCT. 19 — A Duluth, Minn., man was crushed to death Sunday night while attempting to push his boat off rocks on the southwestern shoreline of Lake Superior.

Glenn S. Kooyer, 55, got off his 26-foot Bayliner, named Cheshire Cat, and was standing on the rocks at Canal Point at about 6 p.m. when the accident happened, news reports say. Kooyer apparently slipped, and seas drove the boat against him.

Kooyer was pulled from the water by an onlooker and was taken to an area hospital where he later died of abdominal trauma, according to reports.

Before the accident, Kooyer contacted the U.S. Coast Guard but did not provide an exact location, reports say, so authorities were unable to immediately locate him.
