Uproot piracy at its source — on land

After four American cruisers were killed aboard their yacht by Somali pirates who hijacked the vessel, Jennifer Cooke, director of the Africa Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C., has posted an opinion piece on on how to address the issue of increasingly brazen pirates prowling off Africa.

The International Maritime Bureau reports 11 successful hijackings and 224 hostages taken in just the first six weeks of 2011, bringing the total number of ships currently held to 33 and the number of hostages to an estimated 712.
