A retired welder from Michigan recently launched a 56-foot steel and aluminum yacht that he spent 18 years building.
“I've been waiting for this day for a while,” Terry Marks, 64, told The News Dispatch.
The passagemaking yacht, which weighs 100,000 pounds and has an 18-foot beam, is aptly named Substantial. She is based on lines from naval architect Steve Seaton.
Marks says he's hoping to sell the home-built yacht for $1 million. He said it is difficult to estimate how much he has invested in the project.
“Unfortunately, right now the market is very depressed,” he told the newspaper.
Marks has welding skills from his job at a steel mill and learned boatbuilding by studying and visiting nearby builders, including Palmer Johnson in Sturgeon Bay, Wis., and Burger Boat Co. in Manitowoc, Wis.
