The skipper of a Princess V57 thought the yacht could clear the stone-arched Richmond Bridge on London’s Thames River.
He was wrong and, it being a sunny day in west London, there were plenty of witnesses taking in the warm weather along the riverside.
“I saw this big boat coming towards the bridge and just thought it was not going to fit through,” one witness told The Daily Mail. “There was just this big bang, and then it seemed to be doing some sort of three-point turn, and there was another really loud bang. I thought some of the other boats around might have gone to help it, but it just sat there for about 10 minutes, and then it went under the bridge and everyone started cheering.”
The 57-foot British-built yacht, valued at $1.6 million, amazingly escaped relatively unscathed.
