VIDEO: African speedway

The Luderitz Speed Challenge is held annually in the harbor town in southwest Namibia, a southern African country known for consistent, strong onshore winds.

The competition is simple — go as fast you can by sailing, kiteboarding or windsurfing.

Take a look at Martin Hulsinki setting a new Czech Republic kiteboarding speed record of 40.83 knots.

Although that may seem frighteningly fast to be riding a surfboard, the world record was set at the Luderitz Speed Challenge in 2010, when American kitesurfer Robert Douglas clocked a whopping 55.65 knots.
