Good seamanship or a profoundly stupid act of recklessness?
The video shows a Polish sailboat making its way into Svaneke harbor on the eastern coast of the Baltic island of Bornholm, Denmark.
According to the person who posted the short clip, Cedar was completing a 26-hour sail from Gdynia, Poland, in a gale. Only one of the nine people aboard had any sailing experience.
A hair-raising moment, to say the least.
Although some viewers were impressed with the skipper’s ability to thread the needle of the harbor entrance, not all shared that view.
“In reply to all those commenting that this was [an] ‘amazing piece of sailing,’ I'd like to say that this was an amazing piece of horrible seamanship,” wrote a commenter identified as Ilya Jakovich. “Amazingly irresponsible and amazingly foolhardy, going out in a gale that was known to come days prior to departure, with an inexperienced crew to boot.”
