VIDEO: Going up

Those who have had to be rescued by Coast Guard rescue swimmers speak glowingly of these angels who descend from above to save their souls.

Although Aviation Survival Technicians, as they are formally called, make the procedure look routine, their perspective is quite different from the rescuee’s.

Zachary Wiest, a South Florida-based Coast Guard helicopter pilot, recently posted this video, in which he filmed himself being hoisted in a basket to a Coast Guard MH-65C Dolphin helicopter.

The training exercise gives a sense of the sound and fury as a 44-foot, 9,500-pound helo, its 39-foot rotor roiling the water, hovers about 30 feet above.
