Transiting an inlet can be challenging, and safe passage depends on the tide, waves and the skipper’s ability.
The owner of this catamaran coming into Hawaii’s Honokohau Harbor inlet paid for his miscalculation with the loss of his boat.
The sailor was uninjured, according to local reports, but the boat broke up in the surf and rocks.
“It is considered a total loss,” Department of Land and Natural Resources spokesman Dan Dennison told BigIslandNow.com. “The surf was reported to be heavy but not extraordinary.”
The incident reminded us of a video we brought you last year — a catamaran crossing a treacherous bar into an Australian harbor. The skipper was frazzled, but he made the passage successfully.
Our thanks to Ocean of News for tipping us off to the Hawaiian mishap.
