VIDEO: Mud runners

Running a boat in shallow water is a challenge. Running a boat without any water is impressive.

For decades, crafty manufacturers in Thailand have produced long-tail outboards — also known as Thai mud motors. The concept was developed as a simple, low-cost means of motorizing skiffs for navigating the Southeast Asia nation’s shallow waterways.

And, as this video shows, they transit mud flats pretty easily.

In Thailand, a company called SPS has been turning out mud motors for 40 years. It even has an exclusive North American distributor, based in Florida and aptly named Swamp Runner Mud Motors.

Kits, without the kicker engine, start at $379.
