VIDEO: Narrow escape

Jetboat rides through the canyons have become an iconic image of New Zealand’s tourism appeal, and for good reason: It sure looks like fun.

Custom-built jetboats, driven by skilled skippers with steely nerves, take adrenaline seekers on rip-roaring rides through the Shotover River Canyons at speeds of 50 mph, skimming over shallow 6-inch deep riverbeds. Wow.

Skippers Canyon Jet, one of several jetboat companies in the region, takes people for a three-hour round trip from central Queenstown for about $100 a person, or about $250 for a family of four.
