VIDEO: Perini Navi mast step on 198-footer

Italian superyacht builder Perini Navi recently released a time-lapse video of the mast-stepping operation of Perseus 3, a 198-foot sloop with one of the tallest masts in the world.

Perseus 3 boasts one of the world’s largest carbon fiber masts at 250 feet. It was delivered by the spar maker Future Fibres and assembled at the Perini Navi facility in La Spezia, Italy. The mast weight is optimized at 16.4 tons.

The 77-foot carbon fiber furling boom was made using pre-preg carbon, improving structural performance and weight, compared with standard wet–laminate construction. The boom features a new mandrel furling and locking system as a result of extensive testing and prototyping.

The complete sail set exceeds 107,600 square feet, among which the A2, with its 28,000 square feet, is the largest sail ever built.

Perseus 3 is Hull No. 56 of the Perini Navi sailing fleet.
