VIDEO Reminder: be ready

The Atlantic hurricane season has been relatively slow, but the circumstances are different in the Pacific Ocean, where Hurricane Linda, now weakening, is the eighth major storm of the season.

Pacific waters are very warm right now because of an El Nino pattern that is allowing storms to strengthen quickly.

Still, East Coast waterfront residents remain wary, knowing the Atlantic hurricane season does not officially end until Nov. 1. NOAA has produced an informative video that serves as a reminder to be ready if a hurricane heads for your port.

Researchers from Colorado State University published a letter in Nature Geoscience this week that attempted to show how the downturn in activity in the Atlantic in the past few years suggests that a formerly active period may be coming to an end.

However, fellow scientists are quick to point to flaws in how the data were analyzed in this story on The Weather Network.
