VIDEO: Splashing debut

The tradition of ceremoniously launching a new vessel, whether it be with a bottle of champagne smashed across the bow or a few carefully chosen words of blessing, dates back thousands of years.

In the commercial ship industry, there is less pomp and a whole lot more splash.

Recently, the Dutch shipyard Ferus Smit launched the 404-foot multipurpose ship Nordana Sky and posted a video of the dramatic side launch.

Nordana Sky is hull No. 417 for the shipbuilder and is the first in a series of six that will be delivered to Symphony Shipping. The ship is the first vessel of the builder’s new ecobox design, characterized by its flexibility of loading and economical performance.

The ship will be chartered out to the Danish company Nordana and sail in her fleet after delivery, which is planned for the end of March.
