VIDEO: Surfing on a river

Every winter on the North Shore of the Hawaiian island of Oahu, high surf dams the Waimea River mouth with sand and heavy rains flood the valley.

For local surfers, this offers an opportunity to ride a different type of surf.

Check out the action from January. A bucket loader was hauled in to dig out the sandy dam, unleashing a torrent of water to flow back into the sea — but not before the surfers have a little fun with it.
