VIDEO: The plastic continent

More than 100 million tons of plastic is floating around the world’s oceans, and it affects marine species as well as humans.

There’s an island of plastic the size of Europe out there. In some areas there is almost 60 times as much plastic as there is plankton.

In this computer-animated clip, National Geographic asks what can be done.

This 3-D animation dives into how our consumption of plastics has affected marine life mortality and increased human health risks, and it explores possible long-term solutions.

Soundings published a story about the problem of plastic in our oceans — and an organization that is working on a solution — in the September 2015 issue.
