VIDEO: Watch a dramatic lightning strike of a river bank

As England fans prepared for the return of an annual institution – the 162nd Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race -- BBC Sport captured the moment the River Thames was struck by lightning as spectators braved the stormy conditions to watch the Race.

The rowing race itself was not without its own drama, as the Cambridge women’s team climbed ashore after gallons of water rushed over the edge of their boat, nearly causing it to sink.

Rower Hannah Roberts, shivering and tearful, and her crew the torment was over after they narrowly avoided becoming the first boat to sink since Cambridge’s men in 1978.

Oxford had won by 71 seconds but in the most treacherous conditions seen for a long time here it was an achievement just to complete the famous 4.2-mile course.
