This underwater video shows a pod of as many as 15 pilot whales interacting with each other around an International Fund for Animal Welfare research vessel off southern Spain.

The recent encounter surprised the researchers, and the whales reportedly stayed with the boat — appropriately named Song of the Whale — for more than an hour.

The animals make clicking and other sounds to communicate, and their “conversations” are audible in the video.

Pilot whales have been known to live in stable social groupings and are believed to form matrilineal kinship groups, according to information on Pilot-Whales.org.
