Save the Sound, volunteers, and partners including sponsor Bank of America will gather at 17 sites around Connecticut’s coastline this Saturday to participate in International Coastal Cleanup Day.

For two-and-a-half decades, ICC has engaged hundreds of thousands of volunteers from around the world each year to remove trash and debris from beaches, lakes and rivers, keeping track of every piece of trash they find.

Ocean Conservancy, creator of the global event, uses that data to produce an annual snapshot the world’s marine debris. Last year, more than 550,000 people picked up more than 10 million pounds of trash along nearly 20,000 miles of coastlines worldwide. Save the Sound, which has coordinated the Connecticut cleanups for eleven years, last year brought together 2,450 volunteers to remove 16,310 pounds of trash from Long Island Sound’s shoreline and Connecticut waterways.
