Watch Out for E15 Gasoline

Because of rising gas prices, on April 12, the Biden administration gave a Clean Air Act waiver to allow the sale of gasoline with 15 percent ethanol (E15) in it. That could spell trouble for boat owners, according to the Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatU.S.)

BoatU.S. says recreational vessels are never compatible with E15. It is not permitted by federal law to use E15 fuel in boats, voids the engine warranty, and has been proven to cause damage to marine engines. It also causes engines to run hotter and contains less energy than E10. Recreational vessel engines may only use gasoline containing no more than 10 percent ethanol (E10).

BoatU.S. says the majority of boaters fill up their boats at roadside gas stations. The advocacy group fears that recreational boaters may inadvertently put E15 into their boats because roadside fuel pumps have poor warning labels. They are working with the EPA to improve labeling. Until then, Beware at the pump!

You can read more about E15’s dangers and what to look for at the BoatU.S. website.
