Wave topples solo record bid

A knockdown in a notoriously bad spot in the Southern Ocean appears to have ended British solo sailor Jeanne Socrates' hopes of achieving a record attempt at sailing around the world without stopping.

Socrates, 68, had aimed to become the first woman to sail non-stop solo around the world from anywhere in North America. She sailed to Hawaii and then the northwest coast of the United States from where she recently began her non-stop solo attempt in her 38-foot yacht Nereida.
