The crew of a J/120 had to be rescued after they sailed into a pod of whales during the Baja Ha-Ha, according to an article on Latitude 38. At least one of the whales started attacking the boat's rudder and within about 5 minutes the boat had gone down.
The crew managed to activate the EPIRB and grab two hand-held VHF radios before abandoning ship for the life raft.
The Coast Guard arrived about four hours after the EPIRB was activated, and airlifted all five crewmembers.
In ironically related news, the Coast Guard isued a news release today, reminding vessels 65 feet or larger to slow down in right whale migration areas. Who tells the whales to slow down?
