Wind drives three boats ashore

Strong winds and rough seas grounded three vessels Tuesday morning off Hawaii’s West Maui, including a 60-foot trawler with its engine on fire, officials said.

In addition, state Department of Land and Natural Resources officials were investigating an 11:30 a.m. report that a small sailboat had sunk 300 yards off Lahaina Harbor in about 30 feet of water, said Deborah Ward, the department's spokeswoman. She said attempts would be made to identify the boat today, after its mast was seen occasionally popping out of the water Tuesday.
