John Fagerlund was on a waiting list for five years before he joined the Town River Yacht Club. Then the wait for a slip at the marina began.
To be accepted into the century-old club in Quincy, Mass., you have to prove you mean business.
"You can't join this club and think you're going to have a slip immediately," said Fagerlund, who today is the club's rear commodore. "We frown on people who apply for membership and think, 'I'm just doing it because I just want a place to store my boat.' This is the workingman's club."
