Yacht race plans secret diversion to avoid pirates

Ocean racing has always had its dangers, from hurricanes and sleep deprivation to icebergs, but this year there is a new modern peril. Emergency plans have been drawn up for the 2011-12 around-the-world Volvo Ocean Race to counter the danger of kidnap by Somali pirates.

For the first time in its 38-year history, the six crews who leave their starting port in Spain on Saturday will divert to an undisclosed safe haven on the east coast of Africa midway through the second leg from Cape Town to Abu Dhabi.
