Nothing gets the blood pumping quite like a good race between Maine’s fastest lobster boats. Every year these races take place up and down the coast of Maine, drawing spectators to watch as boats with powerful engines compete for first place.
And there’s good news - we’re right in the middle of the season. The festivities started in June and will end in August. There’s still five more races scheduled, so you have plenty of time to head Down East and get your fix.
While it’s not the same as being there, check out this video of the Bass Harbor Lobster boat races, by Acadia UAV:
Fishermen in Maine having been competing in races, organized or otherwise, since the early 1900s. These days the races are overseen by the Maine Lobsterboat Racing Association, which was formed in 2002. The organization hands out awards for five gasoline-classes and 14 diesel-classes at the end of the season.
